Resources

[community profile] thisfinecrew: "...a place to gather links to resources and step-by-step actions to take to be more involved in various efforts in the wake of Donald Trump's election to the Presidency".

Indivisible Guide: "Former congressional staffers reveal best practices for making Congress listen." Includes a downloadable guide and links to local groups taking action.

Call the Halls: Contacting Your Representatives the Smart Way: Another guide based off viral tweets by a former congressional staffer. (Available through a pay-what-you-want system: $0 does work.)

Who Is My Representative: Put in your zip code and find who represents you in Congress. (Might be slightly outdated - mine still had my senator who retired after the Nov 2016 election, so also check the directories on the US Senate and US House of Representatives sites.)

5 Calls: The theory is "spend 5 minutes, make 5 calls". They help you with numbers and scripts and allow you to log what happens.

Suggestions. )

Action.

If anyone has a chance in the next few hours (currently 7:24 pm Pacific), call your US Senators and leave a voicemail asking them to vote no on Sessions.

You can also call and tell your GOP Senators that the rule they used to silence Elizabeth Warren from using Coretta Scott King's quotes was undemocratic and immoral (or whatever words you'd like to pick). Urge them to call out their party leadership.

To everyone who called about DeVos or got in touch about anything recently: thank you. I had a friend call on my behalf, and the end result wasn't what I hoped for, but Congress is feeling the pressure. It's a start.

Right now.

A couple suggested actions to do immediately if possible (Senate voting's happening tomorrow):

-Call your Senators and ask them to vote no on Sessions (ESPECIALLY SESSIONS) and DeVos. One call per Cabinet member, and if you can, call when Washington offices open. Or try to fill phone inboxes. Or fax. If they're voting no, call them anyway and thank them.

-Call your Senators and ask them to withhold consent. (This guide uses opposition to the Muslim ban as leverage, which is also an important issue.)

Thank you.
[community profile] thisfinecrew has been doing some really good link roundups lately. Mine won't be as comprehensive, both because I don't want them to be too overwhelming (for me) and because I'm trying to go through my Twitter likes/email backlog, which will have biases.

Current thoughts/links/suggestions:

-I have some health-related reasons that have kept me from direct action this week, but I added 5 Calls to the resource page. I may also add the Countable app (read about it here) and some other tracking sites/apps later, but I'd like to vet them more first.

-If you're crunched for time or have anxiety, consider making phone calls after offices have closed. There's always the chance that voicemails will be full/won't be open at all, but it's another option.

-Faxing is also another option. This is another site I haven't tried, but other people are linking faxzero.com as a way to do it.

-Here's a good post on coping with anxiety/panic through all this. I've read a few posts like this during the week: this one's more of a general wellness/how-to-stay focused guide and has been very popular on my feeds.

-How to prioritize the bills you call about. There's a lot of talk of bills flying around, but many of them don't have a chance. This is one guide on how to pick them out.

This week.

The action I'm going to take this week: calling my Senators about Cabinet appointments. (I will also call my rep about ACA if I can handle it, but I'm struggling pretty hard so far, so I don't know if this will happen.)

The two I'm calling about this week: Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State (who just cleared committee and is going for a full Senate vote) and Jeff Sessions for Attorney General (who hasn't cleared committee yet and might have a delay in voting, but still needs a push back). I'm telling my Senators to vote no.

Cabinet appointments and Affordable Care Act protection will likely be my focus in the near future, unless any major, damaging bills that have a chance of passing come up. I'm also going to try to start gathering information about my state's upcoming legislative session this week (my state only has a session once every two years).

What's everyone else focusing on?
